Description
The DI880 3BSE028586R1 is a 16 channel 24 V d.c. digital input module for single or redundant configuration. The input voltage range is 18 to 30 V d.c. and the input current is 7 mA at 24 V d.c. Each input channel consists of current limiting components, EMC protection components, input state indication LED and optical isolation barrier. There is one current limited transducer power output per input. The Sequence of Event function (SOE) can collect events with a resolution of 1 ms. The event queue can contain up to 512 x 16 events. The function include a Shutter filter for suppression of unwanted events. The SOE function can report the following status in the event message – Channel value, Queue full, Synchronization jitter, Uncertain time, Shutter filter active and Channel error.

Applications
Oil, petrochemical, and gas plants:
Analysis: Used in Emergency Shutdown (ESD) and High Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS). Monitors pressure switches and emergency stop buttons; in case of exceeding limits, the DI880 must ensure 100% execution of commands to prevent explosions or leaks.
Large chemical and pharmaceutical plants:
Analysis: Monitors critical interlocks in reactors. Its SIL3-level reliability prevents runaway chemical reactions and protects the surrounding environment.
Nuclear and large thermal power plants:
Analysis: Used for turbine overspeed protection and boiler flameout protection (BMS). In extreme environments, the DI880's high immunity prevents huge economic losses from false trips.
High-risk machining plants:
Analysis: Controls safety light curtains and safety doors on heavy presses or automated production lines. Prevents personnel from accidentally entering and causing injury or death.

FAQ
Q1: Can the DI880 be used as a regular DI module (such as the DI810)?
A: Physically, yes, but it's extremely wasteful. Its price is significantly higher than a regular module, and it only achieves its SIL3 functionality under the safety controller of an 800xA system.
Q2: Why is the DI880's panel light green?
A: This is the visual standard for ABB S800 I/O—green represents the safety series, making it easy for maintenance personnel to distinguish between normal and safety signals in the rack at a glance.
Q3: Does it support hot-swapping?
A: Yes. However, before hot-swapping in a safety system, it must be confirmed that the redundant module is working properly, or that necessary process bypass measures have been taken.
Q4: Why is the signal response slightly slower than a regular module?
A: Safety modules require multiple logic checks and internal voting, which introduces a very small processing delay to ensure the "absolute correctness" of instructions.
Q5: What is its maximum channel current?
A: The typical input current is about 2-3mA, and it has short-circuit current limiting, which can effectively protect the front-end sensor.
