Description
The IC697CPM790 is a Series 90-70 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) CPU. This CPU is a single slot wide module that is specifically used for critical applications such as Emergency shutdown systems, fire, gas and other applications. This CPU supports Triple Media Redundancy (TMR) by incorporating Standalone C program for enabling autotest routines as well.
The IC697CPM790 features 1 MB of battery-backed memory with up to 512KB available for utilization by the user program configured using ladder diagram programming language. This CPU supports up to 12K discrete input and output points, of any combination, when configured in simplex mode; 2048 voted discrete inputs and 2048 voted discrete outputs. Similarly, the IC697CPM790 is capable of handling up to 8K analog inputs and outputs, of any combination when operated in simplex mode and 1024 voted analog inputs. It is equipped with an 80486DX2 microprocessor with clock speed of 64 MHz. This CPU exhibits a relatively fast scan rate of 0.4 microseconds per boolean function, suitable for use in critical applications.
Applications
Large-scale steel and metallurgical plants (core continuous rolling mills):
Analysis: Controls multi-stand continuous rolling mills and blast furnace automation control systems. With extremely short instruction cycles, it ensures microsecond-level pressure and speed compensation during high-speed mill operation.
Large-scale thermal/nuclear power plants:
Analysis: Used in the plant-wide DCS system (such as lateral control of boilers, turbines, and generators). Supports over 12,000 I/O points, integrating complex interlocking protection logic for boilers, turbines, and generators within a single CPU.
Oil refining and large-scale chemical plants:
Analysis: Manages plant-wide tank area interlocks or large reactor groups. Large memory supports extremely large user programs, handling thousands of PID control loops without affecting the scan cycle.
Paper and high-speed film production plants:
Analysis: Controls high-speed paper machine drive systems. Its processing speed ensures absolute precision in multi-axis synchronous control, preventing material tearing at high linear speeds.

Functions
The IC697CPM790 is a single slot programmable controller CPU which allows floating point calculations. The IC697CPM790 is programmed and configured with MS-DOS or Windows based programming software for use in Emergency Shut-Down (ESD), fire and gas, and other critical control applications. It communicates with I/O and smart option modules over the rack mounted backplane (IC697CHS750, 782, 783, 790, 791) by way of the VME C.1 Standard format.
The CPM 790 must be used in conjunction with a Standalone C program which provides Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) operating and autotest routines. It will not operate unless this program is included in the loaded application program.
Installation
It is the responsibility of the OEM, system integrator, or end user to properly install the PLC equipment for safe and reliable operation. Product manuals provide detailed information about installation, startup, and proper use of the PLC equipment. The installation manual, shipped with your PLC programming software, describes how to properly install the equipment. If the PLC installation must comply with supported standards, such as FCC or CE Directives, please refer to the Installation Requirements for Conformance to Standards, shipped with the PLC programming software, for additional guidelines.
1 Installation should not be attempted without referring to the applicable Programmable Controller 2 Installation Manual.
3 Connect the battery to either of the battery connectors on the module (see Figure 2).
4 Put the toggle switch in the STOP position.
5 Put the keyswitch in the Memory Protection OFF position.
6 Make sure that rack power is off.
7 Install the CPM 790 module in slot 1 of rack 0.
8 Turn on power.
