A gearbox can keep production moving while its vibration begins to change. Deciding whether that change deserves an inspection takes more than finding a replacement sensor with a familiar part number. The maintenance team needs a measurement that answers a particular question about the machine.
Bently Nevada's acceleration and velocity sensor families offer different ways to collect that evidence. The 330400/330425 accelerometers focus on casing acceleration, while the 330500 Velomitor and 330525 Velomitor XA families provide velocity measurements. Looking at the families together makes their roles easier to understand and helps buyers ask more useful questions before ordering.
Start with what is happening inside the gearbox. Teeth engage, bearings carry load and several shafts may rotate at different speeds. Their vibration reaches the casing through a structure that influences what the sensor measures.
High-frequency acceleration is of interest when an engineer is investigating short impacts associated with localized tooth or rolling-element bearing damage. Those impacts can be obscured by other machine activity. Appropriate recording equipment and analysis remain essential; the sensor itself does not identify the damaged component.
Within the 330400/330425 accelerometer family, sensitivity and range provide a useful starting point for selection. The 330400 has a nominal sensitivity of 100 mV/g and a 50 g peak acceleration range. The 330425 provides 25 mV/g and a larger 75 g peak range. Both have a specified frequency response of 10 Hz to 15 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB.
That gives engineers a choice between different electrical output levels and amplitude headroom. At 0.1 g, for example, the nominal signal change is 10 mV from the 330400 and 2.5 mV from the 330425. Monitoring channel scaling must agree with the installed sensitivity.
A family approach also means checking the ordered configuration. Evolo Automation lists examples including 330400-02-00, 330400-02-CN, 330425-02-00 and 330425-02-CN. These complete catalog numbers need checking against the installation and relevant documentation before a replacement is selected.
Once data is collected, tooth counts and shaft speeds help explain it. A 24-tooth pinion turning at 1,500 rpm has a 600 Hz gear-mesh frequency. A peak there is normal. Changes in its surrounding pattern, harmonics or sidebands deserve interpretation alongside operating conditions. Envelope analysis or time-synchronous averaging may help with a particular investigation when the acquired data supports them.
Some maintenance tasks call for a view of casing vibration in velocity units. The 330500 Velomitor family addresses that requirement through an integrating piezoelectric design. It is intended for condition monitoring where velocity measurements are useful, including machinery with rolling-element bearings.
The 330525 Velomitor XA extends the choice to a different installation package. Its 316L stainless steel case and weatherproof connector and cable assembly are designed for demanding environments. The manufacturer's installation conditions still matter: environmental performance depends on the correct mating components and assembly.
These families should be considered by measurement objective as well as by their physical construction. The 330500 has a specified frequency response of 4.5 Hz to 5 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. For the 330525, the corresponding response is 4.5 Hz to 2 kHz. The XA designation therefore does not mean a wider measurement bandwidth.
An acceleration spectrum and a velocity trend provide different views of the same machine. A team may need detailed acceleration data for an impact investigation and velocity measurements for an established casing vibration monitoring task. The useful choice follows the information required, with the channel configured accordingly.
The website's catalog includes several 330500 and 330525 variants. That helps a buyer narrow the search, but a matching family prefix is only the beginning. Mounting arrangements, connector requirements, electrical compatibility and approvals need confirmation against the complete configuration. The families cannot be treated as interchangeable simply because they all measure vibration.
A series-based purchase becomes more practical when the sensor is considered together with its mount, cable and monitoring input. A spare sensor on the shelf is much more useful when its associated connection requirements have already been checked.
Access can make this awkward. A convenient inspection cover may be easier to reach than a substantial bearing housing. Yet an accelerometer or velocity sensor responds at its mounting point. Thin covers and flexible brackets can complicate the relationship between internal vibration and the recorded result.
Assess suitable locations before fixing the final arrangement. Record the position and measurement direction, follow the specified mounting procedure and leave enough room for the connector. A clear photograph helps another technician reproduce the setup later.
Check the electrical chain separately. The 330400/330425 units are three-wire accelerometers requiring a compatible negative 24 VDC supply. A connector, supply or monitoring input suitable for another sensor family should not be assumed suitable for these units. Use the documentation for the actual sensor and channel combination.
Sampling, filtering and stored data also need attention. A wide sensor frequency response cannot recover information discarded by the acquisition system. Decide whether the application requires overall trends, spectra, time waveforms or a combination before finalizing the installation.
After commissioning, keep speed, load and relevant process conditions with the baseline. Persistent changes across comparable runs can then be investigated alongside lubrication condition, temperature and inspection findings.
For procurement teams, the same discipline makes inquiries clearer. Supply the full installed part number, required cable details and monitoring equipment information. This gives the supplier a better basis for checking the requested configuration and reduces uncertainty when replacements reach the plant.
Bently Nevada's acceleration and velocity sensor families cover different measurement needs within gearbox condition monitoring. The 330400/330425, 330500 and 330525 families give engineers options for collecting evidence, with distinct output, frequency and installation requirements. Selecting the appropriate family and complete configuration helps turn a catalog search into a measurement the maintenance team can use.
