Description
The YPH108B/SPC Speed Measurement Board provides the same features as the YPH108B/GP board and, in addition, it has 4 programmable 16-bit counters with load and hold registers, 4 digital inputs and 4 digital outputs. The counters and their registers can be configured in various ways to count external or internal pulses (i.e. length, angle, time, etc.) in applications where greater accuracy is needed. The inputs of both boards can receive 5 V signals from single-ended pulse encoders as well as signals from differential pulse encoders. High frequency signals from single-ended encoders can, however, suffer from timing delay if the pulse encoder cables are long and if the encoder has a low driving capacity. This is because the falling edges of the signals are not received separately.
Applications
Non-ferrous metal processing plants: Protect control circuits from acidic gas corrosion during aluminum/copper processing.
Paper slitting plants: Maintain speed synchronization error within 0.05% under high-speed rotation to prevent paper breakage.
Tire manufacturing plants: Monitor low-speed operation of internal mixers under high torque conditions to ensure extrusion accuracy.
Steel milling plants: Stabilize mill speed feedback in high-temperature, high-humidity environments with metal dust.
Textile and chemical fiber plants: Used for winding machine control to cope with the high humidity environment of the production site.

FAQ
Q: If the YPH108B/SPC is broken, can it be directly replaced with the standard version without the SPC suffix?
A: Technically feasible, as functions are fully compatible. However, in chemical fiber, steel, or highly corrosive factories, the standard version may fail within six months due to corrosion.
Q: What types of encoders does the YPH108B/SPC support?
A: Typically supports 5V or 24V incremental encoders (HTL/TTL signals), depending on the jumper settings on the board.
Q: Why do paper mills require the YPH108B/SPC with SPC coating?
A: Paper mill workshops have high humidity and chemicals (e.g., chlorine). Uncoated boards can corrode (“verdigris”), causing speed measurement loss and paper breakage.
Q: Can a problem with the YPH108B/SPC cause the motor to overspeed?
A: If feedback is lost and the system lacks protection, there is a risk. ABB systems usually include protective logic that triggers an emergency stop when speed errors are detected.
Q: How should the YPH108B/SPC with SPC coating be cleaned?
A: Do not use strong solvents. Use specialized electronic cleaner or a soft dry brush to remove surface dust to avoid damaging the protective coating.
