Description
The ABB MSR04XI is a serial communication module designed for robust data exchange in industrial automation, featuring configurable ports supporting RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 protocols. It enables reliable communication between programmable controllers and peripheral devices like scanners, supporting DF1 and Modbus, while offering high compatibility and industrial-grade reliability.
Applications
Natural gas compressor stations: Used to connect to third-party control systems (such as frequency converters or speed governors) for serial data monitoring.
Coal power plants: Serves as a serial gateway in redundant control systems, connecting printers to record critical alarm events.
Oil refineries: Integrates RS232 interface devices such as analyzers and flow meters in distributed control systems (DCS).
Offshore platform operations: Utilizes its high resistance to seismic and electromagnetic interference (IEC 1131) to maintain stable communication in harsh sea conditions.
Chemical production plants: Used when necessary.
THEORY OF OPERATION
Triplicated data enters/exits the module via chassis backplane connector J1 and is isolated from the MPP through bus transceivers. Data is written into dual-port RAM in each of the three processing branches, then voted using a 2-out-of-3 scheme before being sent to the USARTs on the daughter board, where it is converted into serial form and transmitted to the appropriate communication ports.
Incoming data is received by the ports and converted back into parallel format by the USART, then stored in each branch’s dual-port RAM along with port status and embedded processor information. The MPP reads this memory through a second set of transceivers.
The four communication ports operate in full-duplex RS232 mode at up to 19200 baud. They are opto-isolated from internal circuitry and connected via rear connector J2. The ports can also supply power to modems or line drivers for long-distance transmission.
FAQ
Q: What are baud rate limits for MSR04XI Ports 2 and 3?
A: Ports 2 and 3 must use the same baud rate: 9600 or 19200.
Q: Does MSR04XI require system shutdown for replacement?
A: No. It supports hot-swap single-slot replacement under power.
Q: How to check if MSR04XI is operating normally?
A: Health LED solid green and Tx/Rx flashing indicates normal communication.
Q: What is RS232 distance limit for MSR04XI?
A: Recommended within 15 m; longer distances require a signal converter.
Q: Does MSR04XI meet industrial protection standards?
A: Yes. It complies with IEC 1131 Part 2 and meets EMC, vibration, and shock resistance standards.
