Description

The IC697CPU782 is a Central Processing Unit designed to fit into a single rack slot. It is capable of controlling machinery and material handling systems in real-time. A rack-mounted backplane gives this device the ability to communicate with various I/O modules. To operate and control this device, use the run/stop control switch or a connected computer with the corresponding software. The IC697CPU782 has a 16MHz microprocessor with the ability to perform floating point calculations at performance speeds of 0.4 microseconds. This device can process various mixtures of up to 12K inputs and outputs and 8K analog I/O.

Applications

Large chemical plants/refineries: Used to manage complex proportional-integral-derivative (PID) closed-loop control, material proportioning, and multi-process monitoring.

Paper mills: Coordinate tension control during high-speed paper machine operation and provide precise data acquisition for pressing and drying systems.

Large power plants: Responsible for turbine monitoring, water treatment circulation, and power load distribution in power plant auxiliary systems.

Functions

The IC697CPU782 is a single slot programmable controller CPU which allows floating point calculations. The CPU782 is programmed and configured by MS-DOS or Windows based programming software to perform real time control of machines, processes and material handling systems.

The CPU 782 communicates with I/O and smart option modules over the rack mounted backplane (IC697CHS750, 782, 783, 790, 791) by way of the VME C.1 Standard format.

Supported option modules include all IC697 LAN interface modules, several Coprocessor modules, Bus Controller for IC660/IC661 I/O, Communications modules, and all of the IC697 family of discrete and analog I/O modules. Program and data memory for the IC697CPU782 is available by the attachment of an expansion memory board with either 128, 256 or 512 KBytes of battery-backed CMOS RAM, or 256 KBytes w/256 KBytes of Non-volatile flash.

Configuration

The IC697CPU782 and I/O system is configured with MS-DOS or Windows based programming software. There are no DIP switches or jumpers used to configure the system. The CPU verifies the actual module and rack configuration at power-up and periodically during operation. The actual configuration must be the same as the programmed configuration. Deviations are reported to the CPU alarm processor function for configured fault response. Consult Reference 1 for a description of configuration functions.

FAQ

Q: What is an IC697CPU782?
A: The IC697CPU782 is a 16 MHz, 32-Bit, Expandable, Floating Point Central Processing Unit from the GE Fanuc 90-70 Series.

Q: What will I need to test my IC697CPU782?
A: You will need your IC697CPU782, a slot rack, and a power supply.

Q: If the top LED is not on or is blinking when I test my processor, what does that mean?
A: It means you definitely have something wrong with your processor.

Q: How do I test the port that is on IC697CPU782?
A: Go into Proficy Machine Edition, clear the controller fault table and/or the I/O fault table—nothing else. Then, click download and run. You want to download hardware, configuration, and logic. The only thing you are trying to do is get the processor into run mode.

Q: What does each LED indicate?
A: The top LED is the OK LED, the middle LED is the run enabled LED, and the bottom LED is the I/O enabled LED.

Q: What else should I test on IC697CPU782?
A: You should test the toggle switch (that is under the LEDs). This toggle switch turns off the LEDs and you should simply make sure it works by flipping it on and off.

Q: What if I think there is a problem with my processor?
A: You should leave it in run mode overnight or over a weekend to check and see if it will stay in run mode.
