Description

The ABB SC300E-MPP is the central Main Processor Module for the Triguard SC300E Safety Control System. Designed for high-integrity applications up to SIL 3, this module is the core intelligence responsible for executing safety logic, performing continuous self-diagnostics, and managing synchronized communication across the controller backplane.

Applications

Oil refineries: As the core of the Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system, they control high-pressure reactors and flare systems.

Large chemical plants: They provide critical safety interlocks in exothermic reaction control.

Nuclear and thermal power plants: They execute the safety logic of the boiler burner management system (BMS).

Functions

Polling of inputs and outputs

Diagnostics to detect internal faults, power outages, voting agreement and the health of the processor module microprocessor

Tracking of maintenance activities such as hot repair

Detection of latent faults in I/O modules

Execution of safety and control logic

Data acquisition and Sequence Of Events (SOE) for transmission to an operator workstation

LED indicators

The front panel LED’s illuminate to indicate the following conditions:

RUN (green): MPP running (as indicated by microprocessor supervisory watchdog output)

ON -LINE (yellow): MPP on line

PROGRAM (yellow): MPP in program mode

TEST (yellow): Reserved for future use

HEALTH (green): Microprocessor running (as indicated by microprocessor address strobe monitoring circuit)

I/O SCAN (yellow): Scan of I/O modules in progress

BATTERY (green): Backup batteries (1 or 2) healthy

SIO COMMS (yellow): Scan of serial I/O module in progress

Offline/startup Diagnostics

When a SC300E’s MPPs are first powered up, the following diagnostic routines are executed:

Initialisation of all SRAM

Memory configuration and size checks

RTTS and application logic copied to SRAM

All program checksums recalculated and checked

Configuration and checksums of neighbouring MPPs read and confirmed

Initialisation of synchronisation registers

Synchronisation registers of neighbouring processors read

A processor will then pause, waiting for the other two MPPs to complete their startup diagnostics.

FAQ

Q: How long does the program remain after a power outage on the SC300E-MPP?
A: With a lithium battery installed, program retention is about 6 months after power loss.

Q: Can the diagnostic port on the SC300E-MPP be used by users?
A: No. It is reserved for factory testing; debugging is done via engineering workstation.

Q: What do RAM and EPROM store in the SC300E-MPP?
A: EPROM (1MB) stores firmware/OS, while RAM (1MB) stores user security logic programs.

Q: Does the SC300E-MPP need reprogramming after replacement?
A: Redundant systems auto-sync via high-speed serial link; non-redundant systems require manual download.

Q: What are humidity requirements for the SC300E-MPP?
A: 5%–95% non-condensing, with ideal ambient temperature below 40°C.
