Description

The 3500/50E Tachometer Module from Bently Nevada is a two-channel tachometer module designed for industrial automation and rotating equipment control systems. 3500/50E Tachometer Module accepts up to two proximity probe or magnetic pickup signals to measure shaft speed, rotor acceleration, and rotation direction. Input signal range is +10.0 V to −24.0 V with 20 kΩ input impedance (40 kΩ TMR option). Typical power consumption is 5.8 W.

The 3500/50E Tachometer Module provides 4–20 mA recorder output proportional to rpm or rpm/min, 24 Vdc transducer supply (40 mA per channel), and 550 Ω output impedance. Update rate is approximately 100 ms. Front panel LEDs display OK, TX/RX, and Bypass status. The 3500/50E Tachometer Module occupies one full-height rack slot and supports automation monitoring within 3500 systems.

Applications

Turbine Overspeed Trip Signal Generation at Defined RPM Thresholds
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module measures shaft speed within a +10.0 V to −24.0 V input range and processes signals from up to two proximity probes. In steam and gas turbines, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module compares real-time rpm data with programmed alarm setpoints and activates relay or logic outputs when overspeed exceeds configured limits. With a 100 ms update rate, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module ensures rapid trip signal transmission to shutdown systems when rotor speed rises beyond safe operating range.

Compressor Startup Acceleration Tracking Using Dual-Channel Input
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module calculates rotor acceleration based on continuous speed sampling. During compressor startup, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module detects acceleration rate changes within each 100 ms cycle, allowing operators to monitor ramp-up from zero to rated speed. The 20 kΩ input impedance ensures accurate signal capture from proximity probes, while dual channels enable redundant measurement for critical process compressors.

Zero Speed Confirmation for Maintenance Lockout
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module provides zero speed notification when rpm drops to 0 and remains stable within the configured threshold. Using its 4–20 mA output scaled to full rpm range, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module sends a 4 mA signal at zero speed to PLC or DCS systems. This feature supports safe equipment access before mechanical intervention.

Competitive Advantage

Independent Dual 4–20 mA Outputs with 0–600 Ω Load Support
Each channel of the 3500/50E Tachometer Module delivers a 4–20 mA output proportional to rpm or rpm/min. The 0 to +12 Vdc compliance allows reliable transmission across loads up to 600 Ω. The 3500/50E Tachometer Module maintains output accuracy at ±0.25% at room temperature and ±0.7% across temperature range, supporting precise speed feedback to control systems.

Integrated 24 Vdc Transducer Supply at 40 mA per Channel
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module provides 24 Vdc excitation with up to 40 mA per channel, powering proximity probes directly. This eliminates separate power modules and reduces panel wiring. The 3500/50E Tachometer Module supports two transducers simultaneously, reducing additional hardware requirements in automation cabinets.

Low Power Consumption of 5.8 W per Module
With typical power usage of 5.8 W, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module reduces rack power load compared to external tachometer systems. In multi-module racks, the 3500/50E Tachometer Module allows efficient power distribution without exceeding supply capacity.

Fast 100 ms Update Cycle for Dynamic Speed Events
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module refreshes speed calculations approximately every 100 ms. This enables rapid detection of sudden rpm increase, acceleration spikes, or reverse rotation events. The 3500/50E Tachometer Module supports immediate alarm activation during transient mechanical conditions.

Single Full-Height Rack Slot Installation
The 3500/50E Tachometer Module occupies one full-height front slot and one rear I/O slot in a 3500 rack. The compact design of the 3500/50E Tachometer Module allows installation of multiple monitoring channels within limited cabinet space, supporting large-scale automation monitoring systems.
